Thank you for your interest in Aikido.
Kiku Matsu Dojo offers classes for children (6 and up) and adults in the Japanese Martial Art of Aikido.
Children’s classes
Children’s classes are Tuesday 4:30pm, Wednesday 4:30pm and Saturday 10:30am (for beginning students). We have an introductory 4 week program that introduces your child to Aikido and starts developing their skills in doing basic body movements, learning to execute techniques and learning how to fall and roll safely. The fee for the 4 week introductory program is $90.
Adult Classes
For adults, we have an introductory 4 week and a trial class option so you can see if Aikido is right for you.
The trial class gives you a quick taste of what Aikido practice is all about. The fee for the trial class is $25 which will be credited toward your association fee when you decide to continue. For adults trial classes are Monday 6:00pm, Wednesday 6:00pm, or Saturday at 1:00pm.
For the 4 week introductory program Adult students can attend as many of the classes labelled Aikido in our schedule as their schedule permits. During this time you will learn basic body movements (tai sabaki), how to do various techniques and pins, and how to safely fall and roll. The fee for the 4 week introductory program is $90.
What to wear
For a trial class or the introductory program, wear workout clothing. A t-shirt and sweatpants is sufficient. You should remove watches and jewelry before class to prevent damaging it or injury to you or your partner. You will be sitting, rolling and moving on the mat at times so having your knees covered is recommended.
What is Aikido
Aikido is a martial art which focuses on using minimal power to execute techniques by using circular and blending motions to off-balance an opponent.
The philosophy behind Aikido is to harmonize with others instead of attacking, creating a better situation and outcome for both partners. This mentality is extremely useful for thinking about conflicts in general, whether on the street, in school or in the workplace. The rigorous training and mutual respect will help someone express beauty and grace as they pursue self-knowledge and enlightenment through the training of mind and body.
Though aikido itself is practiced as a martial art, the benefits go far beyond its martial nature.
• Sharpen your mind, gain self-awareness and self-confidence.
• Build core strength and improve your overall fitness.
• Join a great community of people and train under experienced instructors.
• Improve your balance, posture, and reflexes.
• Do something more fun and interesting than going to the gym.
• For kids, it provides a structured environment that teaches them discipline, focus, and how to work with others
